Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol is a figurehead of American
pop-art. According to his own definition he
called his works "reproductions of everyday
things", which owe their effect to either
enlargement, alienation effect of isolation or
alignment of the motif.
A true master of Pop Art, the former
commercial artist used popular culture as the
source for his thought-provoking works. He
sought the truth in the labels spread all over
the world by the mass media. From his legendary
‘Campbells’ Soup’ Can to his many portraits from
Goethe to Marilyn Monroe: Warhol was a
challenging genius who turned the ordinary into
the extraordinary.
Andy Warhol celebrated his first success
during the nineteen-sixties with his flower
motifs. Expanding on this subject, his daisies
from 1982 are among his most well known works –
photographs turned into screen printed
decorative designs.
In the nineteen-seventies pictures of Ludwig
van Beethoven and legendary actress Grace Kelly
are among his famous portraits, along with his
own Self-Portrait.
Warhol sought motifs to move the world and
fascinate the masses. This applies to the
Mercedes ‘Silver Arrow’ which became a metaphor
for modernization in the nineteen-fifties.
